The UK Defence Department has a worldwide estate valued at some £18 billion and is the second largest landowner in the United Kingdom with an estate of 240,000 hectares. The report looks at the changes the Department is making to reverse the deterioration in the quality of the estate; it also reports on progress with estate rationalisation.

In 2001 HM Revenue & Customs in the UK signed a 20-year contract with Mapeley STEPS Contractor Limited. The Department transferred ownership and management of around 60 per cent of its estate. The remainder of the Department’s estate consisted of private finance initiative deals on specific buildings, properties rented from other departments, and properties at ports.
